Who is TJK?
When we first started looking for hair care brands to bring on, we had a hard time finding any that were truly non-toxic.
They either had organic ingredients but synthetic fragrances or had unnecessary harsh chemicals. We were overjoyed when we finally found Tabitha James Kraan’s self-named luxury hair care line.
One of the first brands to join our Vossity family, TJK has become a staple in our beauty routines and many of our customers.
We recently enjoyed chatting with Tabitha over a video call to learn more about the brand, the products, and her entrepreneurial story.
Tabitha has been a successful hair stylist in the UK for over two decades. However, it wasn’t until she was pregnant for the first time that she started to examine and question the ingredients in the products she was using.
She had been told that she wouldn’t be able to color or treat her hair for the duration of her pregnancy because of the harsh chemicals in the products that were a part of her daily hair care regimen.
Of course, this would also mean those same chemicals were in the products she used on her salon clients.
This was when the idea came to her to create a hair care line that everyone could use at every stage of their life.
She took her time finding the proper ingredients and formulas to make something that was effective yet still high in quality, and it shows that TJK products are made with over 85% organic ingredients.
We asked her how using organic products and ingredients affected her clients and their hair, and she was pleased to tell us that it was better! She found that her clients were happier, their hair was healthier, and she felt satisfied knowing that the products she was using were safe.
We know that, sometimes, when people hear “organic” mixed in with “beauty,” they question the efficacy of their product.
And to be fair, there are a lot of beauty products out there that are organic but poor in quality. But TJK is entirely different.
The entire line is full of suitable products for you, your scalp, and your hair, but they work! We learned so much from Tabitha, and I am so excited to share our newfound knowledge with all of you!
The Products:
Hair Cleanser – THIS IS NOT A SHAMPOO! I repeat, this is NOT a shampoo. “But Sanja, if it’s not a shampoo, how will it clean my hair??”.
Well, I’m glad you asked. The Hair Cleanser was designed as a scalp treatment to help repair the damage that products, like traditional shampoos, do to your hair and scalp.
A great “How To” video on our site under the TJK tab will show you exactly how to apply the Hair Cleanser. Don’t expect it to foam up because the TJK hair cleanser doesn’t contain harsh chemicals like sulfates and parabens that give that “foaming” effect.
The first few times you use it, you may feel like your hair isn’t “clean,” but rest assured, your hair AND scalp are clean, and your body is adjusting to the change to non-toxic products.
The whole idea behind the hair cleanser is to rebalance your scalp’s natural oil levels that ordinary shampoos strip. With continuous use, you’ll probably need to wash your hair less and use smaller amounts of the cleanser.
Remember, it’s best not to cleanse the length of your hair every day! You’ll only want to gently wash through the length of your hair after an oil treatment, allowing the hair to “take what it needs” in terms of oil.
4-in-1 1 Conditioner – Just like it sounds, it’s a multi-purpose product. It can be used like a traditional conditioner to detangle your hair in the shower and give you that soft feeling during washing.
But it also has three other uses that all happen OUTSIDE of the shower! Whhaaattt?!?! You can use it in the shower like a traditional conditioner or as a leave-in when your hair needs extra love.
But you can also use it on DRY hair to make curls look soft and shiny AND tame those flyaways when leaving your hair straight.
And finally, you can use it as a scalp treatment. This conditioner is one of my favorite products, along with Avalon’s.
She has long, thick hair, and I have short hair, but a lot of it. This product works great for both of us, and the best part is that it smells AMAZING.
Dry Shampoo – This dry shampoo is like a miracle hair product in a bottle. It’s probably the best dry shampoo I’ve ever used, and as a mom of two, I use a lot of it.
Unlike traditional dry shampoos, it doesn’t disappear as soon you spray it in your hair. It also won’t make you and the people around you choke on the gross chemicals that a drug store dry shampoo has when spraying it.
Currently, we carry the travel-sized dry shampoo from TJK, and the packaging itself is gorgeous, but the fact that it comes out as a spray but is a powder is pretty cool. (It’s also the reason that it comes in both “fair” and “dark”).
It smells fantastic and doesn’t just mask that you haven’t washed your hair in a few days or just came from a challenging lunchtime workout.
It absorbs the oil on your scalp and hair and cools your scalp, which is excellent because it removes that greasy hair feeling.
My favorite way of applying it is directly to my brush and brushing it through my hair. You can follow that up by setting your blow dryer to the fantastic setting (never warm or hot) and just giving your hair some quick air. But no matter how you put it on your head, you’ll love it.
Scented Hair Oil – Don’t confuse this hair oil with those you’ve seen on the market before. The TJK scented hair oil is a multipurpose product that helps soothe and heal your scalp and is suitable for all hair types, even oily.
To get the most out of this product, you’ll want to use it as a pre-wash treatment. If you’ll leave it on overnight, you can also do so.
The hair oil absorbs into the scalp and helps balance oil levels. And I know what you’re thinking, “But if my hair is oily and greasy, won’t putting more oil on it just make it worse?”.
Well, the short answer is…no! But the reason your hair might feel oily in the first place is most likely because your body is overproducing it.
Shampoo strips your hair of all the bad and good stuff. So what you have left over is a scalp that starts to overproduce oil to make up for what it’s lost.
The TJK hair oil will restore your scalp and hair balance and leave them feeling and looking healthy.
Hair Perfume – The hair perfume is such a fun product. It’s a great tool that you can use to prevent overwashing your hair because it gives you that pleasant, clean smell without having to jump in the shower.
It has ZERO chemicals and tiny molecules of scented oil to spray on your hair. The hair perfume is lovely, uplifting, therapeutic, and excellent with dry shampoo.
